2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. Tesla Model Y

The all-new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E takes the classic Mustang name and enters the all-electric vehicle market with a stunning new look and a powerful engine. Does it have what it takes to unseat the Tesla Model Y as the go-to e-vehicle crossover? Let's take a look at this electric engagement and find out.

Price and Power

In starting price and available trim levels, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has the edge. It comes in five different trim levels: the base model Select, Premium, California Route 1, GT, and GT Performance Edition. The Select has a starting price of $42,895. The Tesla Model Y has two trim levels, Long Range and Performance, and a starting price of $53,190.

The driving range is a big factor with electric vehicles, and the Mach-E takes it with an impressive range of 305 miles with an extended-range battery. Opt for the GT trim level, and you will get 480 horsepower with 600 lbs/tq. That's enough power for a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. A Performance Model Y engine has a range of 303 miles and offers 456 horsepower sending the vehicle from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds.

The Mach-E provides a practical interior with plenty of storage options. It offers 30 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. When the seats are folded, space increases to 60 cubic feet. Since there is no engine, there are 4.8 cubic feet of storage under the hood. The Model Y offers a maximum of 68 cubic feet of cargo space and a small front trunk for additional storage.

Technology and Safety

The Mach-E excels with technology offering a 15.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display. It also comes with Ford's adaptive and user-friendly Sync 4A technology system, so you can personalize your driving experience. Other features include a wireless phone charging pad and the ability to use your smartphone as a key. The Model Y comes with a 15.0-inch touchscreen that system information.

Safety is key, and Ford's Co-Pilot 360 Technology features a host of safety features including Pre-Collision Assist with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot information system, and a rear-view camera. Other safety offerings include lane keep assist and automatic evasive steering. The Model Y features forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.

It's a close competition, but the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E comes out on top with a lower starting price and a more powerful electric engine. The Mach-E also was named North American Utility Vehicle of the Year and was Car and Driver Magazine's 2021 EV of the Year.
